UNDERGRADUATE PLACEMENT YEAR IN INDUSTRY | IT Support
Have you ever wondered how the discount retailers manage to stock the well known brands at a bargain price? How the online prices can differ so much to the same product available in stores?
In the lively and competitive FMCG arena, Pricecheck has long established relationships with many brand owners and major suppliers, sourcing world famous brands which we then sell and distribute to a range of different outlets. We understand business – we buy and sell quality products, whilst appreciating the market and getting to know exactly what our customers want. This simple and driven approach has seen us develop trade in 82 countries and we continue to explore new categories, markets, services and territories.
And we’re getting it right too – we were awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade and have recently been named in the Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200, Sunday Times BDO Profit Track 100 and in the London Stock Exchange’s 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain in 2018 and again in 2019.
We buy thousands of product lines from hundreds of suppliers – we never know where the next deal will take us, making for a fast paced, ever changing and exciting place to work and we’re on the lookout for an undergraduate student to join our IT team for their year in industry.
What you’ll be doing
Reporting into the IT Director, you will be part of the team supporting a busy trading business and assisting in the development of ongoing technologies.
Whilst there is no thing as a typical day, your duties will range from supporting users and maintaining established systems, to developing new programmes and helping to build new business solutions. You will be confident in designing and updating SQL reports and work closely with the IT Director to enhance bespoke systems using Microsoft and iOS technologies. You will learn the skills to identify where technology can enhance rather than restrict a business and work through the build, test and implementation phases of IT related projects. You will be liaising with other departments throughout the organisation to integrate IT solutions and provide varied assistance and support, gaining an appreciation that IT is much more than just computer screens and keyboards.
Given that our placements are 15 months long, you will be learning the ropes from our current placement student, and then becoming the mentor and passing on your knowledge and experience to the students who then follow on from you in the next placement year.
How you’ll do it
Following an in depth induction where you will spend time with all areas of the business, you will be working with our existing placement student and the wider IT team in getting to know our bespoke systems and processes as part of your on the job training. Given how varied the roles can be, you will thrive in a dynamic and ever changing environment, with a desire to apply your knowledge, learn skills and take direction from those around you.
What we’re looking for
With so much going on, you need to be sharp, smart with an eagerness to learn – we ask that you be studying towards an IT related degree with strong A levels (or the associated equivalent). However, we look for more than just academic achievements of our team. Show us that you have a real interest in business and a forward thinking approach to technology - we would love to hear more from you.
You will be a confident communicator and work with clarity, with the tenacity to see activity through to timely completion. You will be an organised and logical thinker, operating at pace and under pressure, whilst not sacrificing quality, accuracy and customer service. You will see the importance of attention to detail, yet awareness for the bigger picture and be keen to understand how business works in practice.
Whilst there will be plenty of training available and scope for self-development, knowledge and experience in HTML, CSS, Java Script, SSIS/SRS/SSAS, Objective C or Swift, PHP, Active Directory and Photoshop would be desirable.
