Careers | Graduate Buying Scheme - Fast Track
Have you ever wondered how the discount retailers manage to stock the well known brands at a bargain price? How the online prices can differ so much to the same product available in stores?
In the lively and competitive clearance market, Pricecheck has long established relationships with many major manufacturers and brand owners, sourcing quality product which we then sell on to a range of different outlets. We are traders – we buy and sell quality product, whilst understanding the market and getting to know exactly what our customers want. This simple and driven approach has seen us develop trade in over 75 countries as we continue to explore new categories, markets and territories.
And we’re getting it right too – we were awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, High Growth Business of the Year at the Sheffield Business Awards 2017 and Export Business of the Year in 2015 as well as being recognised in The Sunday Times International Track 200.
We buy thousands of product lines from hundreds of suppliers – we never know where the next deal will take us, making for a fast paced, ever changing and exciting place to work and we’re on the lookout for graduates to join our team.
What you’ll be doing
Working as part of an exciting trading team, this development role is the starting point on your buying journey with Pricecheck. Pricecheck strongly believe in promoting from within, and here is your first step towards a rewarding and fruitful career as Buyer, negotiating and developing relationships with your own suppliers and category base.
Learning key skills and taking on knowledge from those around you, you will become a strong negotiator and a master of spotting a solid, commercial deal – a combination which bodes well for a capable and promising Buyer.
What’s in it for you
Along with a competitive starting salary, in time you will be invited into the company wide bonus scheme – we want to recognise your hard work and efforts. As you progress through the scheme and start to take on your own suppliers and categories, you will also benefit from commission payments based upon the deals you make. You will also be enrolled into our pension scheme and the Westfield health cash plan, with the option to benefit from our childcare voucher and Cycle to Work scheme if that is something that interests you. Given you will learn the product list inside and out, it’s only fair that you can benefit from the staff discount too!
Whilst long established, Pricecheck are continuing to grow and we want a certain kind of person to grow with us too. If you join us with a solid work ethic and clear ambition, you are willing to work hard, push yourself and show enthusiasm, progression opportunities at Pricecheck are a plenty.
What we’re looking for
With so much going on, you need to be sharp, smart with an eagerness to learn – we ask for a minimum of a 2:1 degree in any discipline with strong A levels (or the associated equivalent). However, we look for more than just academic achievements of our team. Show us that you have entrepreneurial spirit, an interest in trading and a passion for product - we would love to hear more from you.
You will be alert, agile and a keen communicator along with being results driven and motivated to achieve – we can give you the tools, guidance and support to succeed, but you need the right attitude and determination to do it.
Without a static product list or buying to specific request, you will need to have strong numerical skills (achieving at least a grade B in GCSE Maths) and to be able to apply these skills to ever changing situations. You must be able to operate strategically and think analytically, as each deal you make will be underpinned by a combination of commercial understanding and customer requirement. You will see the importance of attention to detail, yet awareness for the bigger picture and always thinking of the next opportunity and how to take the category further.
As we trade internationally, we’re keen to hear from people who have language skills or experience of living and working overseas but these are not essential.
How you’ll do it
Following a whistle stop tour of the business in your early days with Pricecheck, you will then work through a rotation of in depth training across different business functions to gain an appreciation of how the buying function fully operates.
Starting behind the scenes and getting to grips with the product itself, you will spend time with the distribution and quality control teams who oversee the purchases coming in to our warehouse. You will then follow this by getting to know our bespoke systems in order to create, update and maintain product records to provide an accurate representation of the stock we hold. Liaising with the Buyers, you will manage the administration behind our purchases - from accurate purchase order entry, stock photography, product analysis and descriptions.
We recognise that a Pricecheck Buyer is most effective when they fully understand the business as a whole – therefore, it is imperative to understand how we sell the product too. As part of the Sales Support team, you will assist an International Account Manager to match the right product with the right customer, together generating business and increasing turnover – getting a buzz from a good sale gives a great indication of a potential passionate Buyer too!
Moving across to the wider buying team, you will be researching existing and emerging product categories to ensure we are best placed and best informed to pursue new opportunities. By collating brand, manufacturer, customer and product information, you will start to understand the requirements involved in identifying industry trends and analysing stock offers, take steps to also support the team of current Buyers when needed.
By the end of the first year, we would anticipate you being ready and raring to take on your own suppliers and categories, securing the best deals and identifying new business areas to develop.
In order to succeed, you will show versatility and awareness of how to read a situation – you will be a true ‘plate spinner’ and thrive in a busy environment where your time management skills and multi-tasking ability will help you succeed. You will embrace a challenge and not be afraid of hard work, relishing the opportunity to learn from those around you whilst applying your own personal touch.
