Women in Wholesale – Challenging the Norm

From Debbie Harrison, joint MD of Pricecheck:

"I received an email from Women in Wholesale last week which prompted me to reflect on the diversity within the industry and here at Pricecheck.

"The email asked that you fill in a survey so that the group, ahead of its anniversary, could analyse the state of the industry and female representation. The link to the survey is here.

"This follows a similar survey from the group four years ago which found, remarkably, for an industry which roughly hires 5.3 million, that only 11% of senior figures in wholesale were women.

"At Pricecheck, we’re proud to be smashing gender quotas. Indeed, many in our industry are actively pushing for gender diversity, which is encouraging to see. It’s vital for our industry and for the future of Pricecheck to continually look at unlocking the power of gender diversity and inclusion.

"Our workforce is 40% female which, in the male-dominated wholesale industry, is a figure we’re incredibly proud of. I’m also thrilled that women make up 22% of our warehouse team and that 43% of our managers with direct reports are female. Senior management has an equal 50/50 split of men and women and a third of our board is female.

"We may be making strides when it comes to gender diversity, but we’re also working hard to ensure that workplace diversity at Pricecheck includes welcoming individuals through different backgrounds and particularly different ages.

"As a business owner, nothing pleases me more than being able to say we’ve had employees with us for 10, 20, even 30 years! They’ve become part of the furniture, and we’ve added generations, family members and most recently ten new paid university placement students, along the way.

"For us, diversity ensures we have a variety of skills and experience across all departments, allowing us to better serve our customers and suppliers."
